WINSLOW, Ariz. —Residents and visitors to Winslow and Holbrook can expect to see cowboys riding horses and delivering mail in the fashion of the Old West during a Pony Express Ride Jan. 29.
For the event, 13 riders with the newly formed Clear Creek Cowboys Association in Winslow will ride 37 miles from Winslow to Holbrook to deliver the mail.
This is the group’s inaugural Pony Express ride. They are inviting the public to join them in a send–off and return as well as participate by purchasing mailers and postcards to be delivered by riders.
“We would love to have people come out and participate. It’s our first inaugural ride,” said Tim Kelley, a member of Clear Creek Cowboys.
Special mailers and postcards are currently available for purchase at the Winslow Post Office, Dewitt Ranch Supply and the Winslow Chamber of Commerce. They cost $1 each. Postage must be attached. A drop box for the mailers is available at the Winslow Post Office. The last day to drop a mailer or postcard is Jan. 28.
The public is also invited to participate during a meet and greet Jan. 27 at noon at the Winslow Chamber of Commerce. During that time the Winslow postmaster will swear-in riders as mail carriers and a mock hand-off will be made for the public to see at 1:30 p.m. in front of the La Posada Hotel in Winslow.
“We’ll have five riders where people can see a hand-off of the mail between riders,” Kelley said.
Additionally, Clear Creek Cowboys plan to visit Jefferson Elementary School and Bonnie Brennan Elementary School in Winslow Jan. 27 to share the history of the American west with students. Students will have the opportunity to hand in their mail for delivery.
On Jan. 29, riders will leave the Winslow Post Office at 9:30 a.m. The public is welcome to witness the send-off. Riders will then ride down Highway 99 before going east on Territorial Road to Holbrook. They will ride to the Holbrook Post Office where they will then present the mail bags to the Winslow postmaster at noon.
Following the ride, riders will return to Winslow for a parade at 2 p.m. The parade will go east on Second Street, ending at Tom’s Tavern where a family friendly celebration will be held. The event is open to the public.

Clear Creek Cowboys Association was started in 2021 by a group of family and friends in the Winslow area. Their mission is to help preserve the American cowboy heritage.
“We strive to support youth, charities, community service and the western way of life,” Kelley said. “Because it’s not something that’s really taught anymore.”
The association is open to the public, you do not have to be a Winslow resident to participate. They currently have around 20 members and are working on their non-profit status.
So far, the group has participated in the Navajo County Rodeo, a ride with the Prescott Long Riders and the Winslow Christmas Parade.
